Not the stock 80.

It is the one in between.

You know you can hit the 60. You know you can hit the 80. Then the number comes up 67, or 73, and suddenly you are standing there trying to manufacture something. Take a little off. Add a little speed. Shorten the backswing. Grip down. Maybe hold the finish. Here is where I used to get myself in trouble. I would turn a small distance adjustment into a new golf swing.

The course wasn’t asking for that.

Sometimes it was only asking for the same trusted motion to land a little farther. That is the job in this session. We are going to take a carry you already know and learn to move the landing point in small steps. No new swing for every number. No percentage chart over the ball. The previous landing gives you the next picture.

That is it.

If I were standing beside you at the back of the range, I would start with one comfortable wedge shot. Nothing heroic. Hit the shot you already know and watch where it lands. Now take another ball and try to land it just a few yards beyond the first one.

Do not fix anything yet or decide you need a longer backswing.

Just look at the first landing spot, move the picture a little farther, and hit the shot. That little exercise tells us quite a bit. If you can move the carry without filling your head with instructions, there is something useful to build on. If five extra yards immediately turns into a mechanical search, we have found the problem.

The previous ball should help shape the next shot. It should not start an argument about your swing.

Hit one wedge noticeably higher than the next and, even with a decent strike, you probably are not getting exactly the same carry from both.

Where seasoned players get into trouble is what happens next.

They decide they need to control trajectory, and suddenly a simple wedge shot comes with six new instructions. Ball back. Hands forward. Hold the finish down. More weight left. Keep the face from doing this. Make sure the chest does that.

I have been there.

Pretty soon you are standing over a 70-yard wedge thinking about everything except the 70-yard wedge.

There is a cleaner way to work on ball flight:

Give the ball a window.

Let the window be the instruction.

That is what this session is about. We are not trying to manufacture a textbook launch angle or build one universal wedge shot that somehow works for every player, every club, and every distance. We are going to find the flight your stock wedge already wants to produce, make that picture visible, and then see whether you can keep your carry reasonably predictable inside it.

That last part matters.

A pretty flight that misses the carry by 12 yards is not much use. Before you build anything, hit three normal stock wedges.

Do not change your motion. Just watch them, then describe the natural flight in one sentence. Maybe yours starts fairly low and climbs. Maybe it launches a little higher and stays there. Maybe the window is flatter than you thought.

It does not matter yet.

Just see what you actually have. If those three balls seem to travel through roughly the same part of the sky, you already have the beginning of a launch window.

The question is whether you can trust it when the distance starts changing.

My stock half sand wedge carry distance is 70 yards. I know because I have hit that shot many times on the range and on game day.

My stock half swing gap wedge carry distance is 81 yards, things got a little awkward when I looked into the range finder and saw 76 yards.

I know, it does not seem important, but 5 to 6 yards is 15 to 18 additional feet away from the cup. So instead of a 10-foot birdie opportunity, we might have a 25-foot tough two putt to negotiate.

For years I was doing what most seasoned players do with stock numbers. I would stand there trying to manufacture something between two stock swings. Take a little off this one or add a little to that one. Try to shorten the backswing, slow the finish down a little, or grip down club. Ever try to open the club face to take a little off? For me, whatever seemed reasonable at the time.

Some of those shots came off ok, others were basically educated guesses. That is the problem this fairway wedge session is meant to clean up. I’m not going to give you 15 different stock swings; you do not need that right now. The goal is to find out which in-between carries are actually available to you and which ones you don’t trust.

There is a difference. Five-yard precision sounds nice on paper, but I am not asking you to become a robot who hits every wedge exactly 65.0 yards. Golf does not work that way, and neither do people. What I want is a usable map so if you see 55 yards, do you have a shot you trust? And then what happens at 65 yards, and 75 yards.

I have spent a lot of time on this issue, and it comes down to a simple question.

Can you picture the carry, pull the trigger on your swing, and produce something inside a reasonable window without calibrating distance control and changing your swing after every ball?

Before you go any farther, try one simple baseline. Pick a familiar stock carry and then choose a number five yards away from it. Then do this, call the carry before you hit either ball.

Do not look at the monitor or range finder, or hit three more balls trying to find the exact swing. See the number, picture the landing, pull the trigger on the swing you believe will produce it, and then check the result.

If the stock number feels clear but the five-yard adjustment feels like a guess, you have found the reason for this session.

hit wedges to the red flag, the blue flag, the short flag, and whatever patch of grass happened to be open that day.

Then they walk away saying something like:

“I hit it pretty well.”

Maybe they did.

But that does not tell them whether their carry control is getting better.

I spent plenty of practice sessions doing the same thing. Hit lots of decent shots. Hit one close. Finish on a good one. Leave feeling encouraged.

Then get on the course on game day and find out I still did not know exactly where the ball was going to land.

The problem was not always my wedge motion, even though that is where my thoughts went to.

The problem was that I had never created an honest baseline.

A flag gives you something to aim at. It does not automatically give you useful feedback. The ball can finish close after landing short and rolling. It can land beside the flag and kick away. You can hit one perfect shot and forget the five loose ones that came before it.

A visible landing target changes the question.

Instead of asking:

Was that a good swing?

You begin asking:

Did the ball land where I intended?

That is a much better question for distance-control training.

Try this before continuing

Place one towel at a comfortable wedge distance.

Give yourself three balls.

Go through your normal routine, call the carry you are trying to produce, and watch the first bounce. Do not judge the finish position.

How many of the three landed on the towel or inside a reasonable area around it?

That is your starting point.

Not your best swing or best ball.

Your starting point.

Paid Members can continue below with the complete scored session, progression rules, retention test, and course-transfer assignment.

plenty of them believing I had finally figured something out.

The contact was clean. The distances were tight. Three or four balls landed in almost the same spot.

You put the wedge back in the bag feeling pretty good about yourself.

Then you get on the course the next day, face one ordinary 70-yard shot, and whatever you found at the range is nowhere to be seen.

That is a hard thing for an seasoned player to admit.

You did the work. You hit the balls. You paid attention. You were not out there wasting time.

But the course does not care how good your last five shots looked when you hit the same wedge from the same lie to the same target.

The course gives you one ball.

That is the difference.

The Blackout Journal is a reader-supported publication. The first few are a little scattered. Then the motion begins to settle.

By the tenth ball, you are getting close. By the fifteenth, the strike feels much better. By the twentieth, you are clipping one shot after another toward the same flag. Now it feels as though the work is sticking.

Maybe it is.

But maybe you have simply become very good at hitting the next 70-yard shot.

That next ball has a lot of help. You already know the club and the distance. Your feet are in roughly the same place. The last swing is still fresh in your body and you saw the previous ball fly, so you know whether to give the next one a little more or a little less.

The range lets you correct as you go but the course usually does not.

On the course, you may have waited ten minutes since your last wedge shot. The lie has changed. So has the target, maybe the wind too.

You have a score going and there is no previous ball sitting there to remind your body what to do.

You have to produce the shot cold.

That is where a smooth range session and useful training begin to separate.

Pretty Groups Are Not the Same as Learning

There is nothing wrong with repetition.

Sometimes you need several balls to feel a movement, understand a club or settle into a new distance. But you have to be honest about what that kind of practice proves.

A tight group proves you performed well under those conditions.

It does not automatically prove you can recall the shot later. It does not prove you can adjust when the distance changes. And it certainly does not prove the motion will show up when you have one ball and the shot matters.

That does not mean the range session was useless. For me, it means the session is not finished.

The real question is not:

How good did my best ten-ball stretch look?

The better question is:

What remained after I stepped away?

That is the part I spent too many years missing.

I judged practice by how settled the motion felt near the end. I wanted the last few balls to reassure me.

Most golfers do, we like leaving on a good one.

But the course rarely asks us to hit the twentieth version of a shot. It asks for the first one.

A Simple First-Ball Test

The next time you practice distance control, finish with this small test.

You only need one wedge, five balls and a few measured or imagined targets.

First, choose a familiar distance.

Hit two balls to it.

Then choose another familiar distance and hit two more.

Do not grind over them. Go through your routine and pull the trigger.

Now step away for five minutes.

Put the club down. Get a drink. Look at something else. Let the feeling of those last swings fade a little.

When you return, choose a different distance.

Better yet, have someone else choose it for you.

Go through your complete routine and hit one ball.

Just one.

Before you swing, decide what would count as an acceptable finish window. It does not need to be a tour-sized circle. Make it realistic for your game.

Then record the result:

Inside the window or outside the window.

No excuses. No immediate correction ball.

The test is over.

The point is not to prove that you are good or bad at wedge play. It is to see what happens when the previous ball is no longer guiding you.

That first attempt will often tell you more than the four balls before it.

Do Not Turn the Result Into Another Swing Thought

This is where golfers can make the test harder than it needs to be.

They miss the finish window and immediately begin searching for a mechanical reason.

Maybe I got quick. Maybe my backswing was too long. Maybe my hands were too active. Maybe I need to keep my chest moving.

Now one missed test ball has created three new swing thoughts.

That is not the lesson. So the best thing you can do is notice the result, but keep the lesson small.

Did the distance feel clear before you started?

Did you commit to the target?

Did you use your full routine?

Could you sense the shot without borrowing the feel from the ball before it?

That is useful information so write it down and move on.

You are not trying to build a new checklist. You are learning what remains when the training wheels come off.

Train the Shot You Will Actually Face

The range is not the enemy. Mindless repetition is not even the real enemy.

The problem is believing that smooth repetition automatically means the skill will travel with you. Sometimes it will and sometimes it will not.

You have to test it.

Change the target, step away, come back later, use your pre-shot routine, then score the first ball.

Give yourself fewer chances to rehearse and more chances to respond.

That is closer to golf and that is the point.

The goal is not to carry better swing thoughts onto the course. The goal is to train well enough that you do not need to supervise the motion when the shot matters on the golf course.

So enjoy the good range session. Just do not let the last five perfect balls tell you the work is finished.

Before you leave, find out what you can do with one.

Journal prompt:
What remained when I no longer had the previous ball to guide me?

When does your range game usually stop feeling like your course game?
